五)出门 E: In Public
一、衣冠不求华美,但须整洁。
Outfits need not be ostentatious but clean and tidy.
二、见长者,必趋致敬。见幼孩,必夸赞,见青少年,点头为礼。
A show of respect should be given when meeting adults. A praise should be given when meeting a child. Acknowledge the younger ones that you are acquainted with.
三、不高呼,不手指,不招呼。
In a high place, avoid yelling from a distance, pointing, or shouting greetings.
四、路上不嚼食物,不喝饮料,不游荡。
Avoid eating, drinking, and fool around in the streets.

五、让乘客下车后再上车,乘车见长者必让座,
Let the people get off first, then get on the bus. Offer your seat to the elderly while on bus.
六、夜必归家,因事不能归时,必先告家人。
You should come home when it is dark, but if that is not possible you should inform your family members.
七、车马繁杂区,仅招呼敬礼。
Avoid greeting or waving when crossing a busy intersection
八、不立在路上久谈。
Avoid engaging in long conversations on the streets.
九、不走马路中间,越路须先向左右看清,不可与汽车争路。
Avoid walking in the middle of the road. Look carefully both ways before crossing the street, and do not block the road for vehicles.
十、行走时,步履宜稳重,并宜张胸闭口,目向前视。
When walking, step steadily, keep a proper upright posture, close your mouth, and face forward.
十一、遇妇女老弱,尽先让路让座。
Give women, children, and the elderly the right way and priority in seating
十二、途中有人问路,须详为指示;问路于人,须随即称谢。
When others ask for direction, instruct them clearly; When you ask for directions, thank them afterwards.
十三、推购物车时,要注意行人,不要疾行,以防撞人。
Pay attention to the pedestrians when pushing shopping cart. It would be easy to hit people if you push the cart fast.
十四、垃圾要扔到指定地方。
Garbage should be thrown to the designated place.
十五、在舟车上或飞机上,不探首或伸手出窗,并不得随便涕痰。
When riding in a car, boat, or plane, do not stick your head out of the window for a better look, or place your hand outside the vehicle, or spit out the window

一、座有次序,上座必让长者。
二、入座后不横腿,不伸足。
三、主先举杯敬客,客致谢辞。
四、主人亲自烹调,须向主人礼谢后食。
五、主人敬酒毕,正客须回敬主人。
六、举筷匙,必请大家同举。
七、用筷夹菜,只取向己一方者,不起立向它盘器中取菜。
八、筷匙不向碗盘顶心取菜取汤。
九、公食之菜,不用己筷翻搅。
十、匙有余汁必倾尽,方再入公食菜中。

十一、自己碗中之肴菜,不可反回公菜中。
十二、筷匙所取肴菜,不宜过多。
十三、食勿响舌,咽勿鸣喉。
十四、公食以不言为原则,须言亦应避免唾沫入公器中,切勿大声喧哗。
十五、咳嗽必转身向后。
十六、勿盯食一菜,不顾他人。
十七、碗中不留饭粒。
十八、不对人剔牙齿。
十九、客食未毕,主人不先起。客食毕,欠身称赞美食。
二十、起席,主逊言慢待,客称谢。
二一、宴毕,主人进巾进茶。

(三)处世 C: Social conduct
一、不说人之短,不说己之长。
Avoid exposing other people’s weaknesses and boasting your own strengths.
二、家庭之事,不可向外人言。
Avoid telling other people about personal family matters.
三、口为祸福之门,话要经一番考虑再说。见失意人,不说得意语;见老年人,不说衰丧话。
Speech is the door to positive or negative consequences, so think before you speak. When you are with a discouraged person, avoid talking about your own successes. When you are with an elderly person, avoid talking about death or other related topics.
四、交浅不可言深,绝交不出恶声。与人讲诚信,助人为乐。
Avoid telling your secrets to acquaintances or speaking ill of those who are no longer your friends. Be honest, trusty and happy to help others.
五、不侮辱人,不捉弄人,不向人开玩笑。
Avoid insulting others or making jokes about them.
六、与残疾人会面,须格外恭敬。
Be respectful when you meet people with disabilities.
七、于饭店侍者,花匠等体力劳工莫刻薄傲慢。
Avoid taking advantage of those working in small businesses or that engage in manual labors. Do not treat them meanly and look down upon them.
八、施恩求忘,受恩必报;开罪于人须求解,开罪于我应宽恕。
Do not expect rewards for doing good deeds and strive to repay the kindness shown to you. Beg for forgiveness when you offend others and sincerely forgive those who offended you.

九、善人自当亲近,须要久敬;恶人自当远之。
Keep company with good people and always show them respect. Treat immoral people with politeness while keeping a distance from them.
十、遇事要镇静,做不到的事,莫妄逞能。
Remain calm in any situation and avoid committing to do things you are incapable of doing.
十一、凡事要合理智,不可偏重感情。
Be just and fair in all situations, not letting your emotions to cloud your judgement.
十二、己所不欲,勿施于人。己所欲,勿强人接受。
Do not give to others something simply because you do not want it yourself. Do not force the others to take something simply because you like it.

二)在校 B: When at school

一、师长上下课时,起立致敬。下课时,起立再见,不一哄而散。
Stand up with respect when the teacher enters or leaves the classroom. Say goodbye to teacher, and do not break up in a hubbub.
二、向师长质疑问难,要先举手,再发问。
Raise hands and wait for the teacher to call on, and then ask the teacher questions or seek help with problems.
三、路遇师长,趋前问好。路遇同学,相互问好。
When you meet your teacher outside of the school, stand up straight and greet them politely and respectfully.

四、听讲时,应端坐,不随意讲话;不用手托下巴,不支腿,翘足。上课不玩手机和电脑游戏。专心认真,不要心不在焉。
In class, sit properly or stand properly. Do not speak whenever you want. Avoid resting your chin on your hands, crossing your legs, slouching or putting your feet on chairs. Do not play cell phone and video games. Listen attentively, not absent-mindedly.
五、考试时,不交头接耳,或左顾右盼。更不能抄袭,作弊。
During exams, avoid speaking or looking around. Do not cheat in the exams.
六、对同学要关心友爱,不可以捉弄欺侮。
Love and help your classmates. Do not bully, or make fun of your classmates.
七、要按时完成作业。作业整洁,不杂乱。上课时发的练习材料要放好,不要用完即丢。
Finish homework on time. Homework should be neat, and well organized. The papers given by teacher in the class should be kept in file. Do not throw away.
八、保持教室整洁,不扔纸屑。爱护桌椅和其它设备。不要随意改动电脑的设置。下课后清理周围,并将座椅放回原处。
Keep the classroom clean. Do not little the floor with scraps of paper. Take good care of chairs, tables and other property. Avoid changing the setups of the computer. Clean the area around you, and put the chair back when you leave.

给家长和同学们的一封信

亲爱的家长们,同学们:

暑假以来,我一直在反省自己。
作为一位老师,首先要知道老师是什么?汉朝有一位学者叫杨雄,他说:师哉,师哉,桐(童)子之命也。老师啊!老师啊!你决定了孩子一生的命运!是啊,老师这个职业实在太伟大了。因为老师不仅要教同学们知识,还要教做人,这才是一位合格的老师。一位只教知识的老师是在教书,而一位既教知识,又教做人的老师是在教育。我们把education翻译成“教育”,其实是不太确切的。Education的意思是:the art or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge and of developing the powers of reasoning and judgment. 看看我们的老祖宗在“说文解字”中是怎么说的:教是“上所施,下所效”;育是“养子使作善也”。可见,在中国人的概念中,教育包括教如何做人。
会做人的人起码要懂“礼”。什么是“礼”?礼就是鞠躬,打招呼吗?这叫“仪”。“仪”加上“敬”,就叫“礼”了。所以,见到人,不仅要打招呼(现在,有不少孩子连打招呼都不打),还要把“敬”表现出来,不要像饭店,或百货公司门口的小姐一样,让人有“恭而无礼则劳”的感觉。到底什么是“敬”呢?我觉得把别人真正放在心里就叫“敬”。这样做出来的动作才叫“礼”。有人把“礼”称作“人与人之间最优美的距离”,是最值得让人回味的相处和交往。
我们经常听家长说:哎呀!我那个孩子很头痛,我都不知道跟他讲过多少次了,还是讲不听。请注意,教育不是光讲,还要做。老祖先告诉我们:言教者讼,身教者从。这个“讼”就是跟你争辨的意思。我们常常说现在的孩子一言九顶,你说一句,他顶九句。这就是只有言教的副作用。身教比言教有效。“上行下效”就是这个意思。教育者先受教育,教育者要时刻“反求诸己”。老师对家长和同学有礼,家长对父母,兄弟姐妹有礼,这就是最好的教育。答案往往在我们自己身上。我们是品格的实践者,我们是素质的实践者,我们应该以身作则,我们应该先正己然后化人。
言教也是不可缺的。我觉得李炳南编的“常礼举要”很贴近生活,很容易懂。我们在美国,这些中国的老古板有用吗?其实,不管是哪里,原则是一样的:要把别人放在眼里,要把别人放在心里。没有人喜欢自己被忽视,被冷落,全世界都一样。这里没有美国,中国的区别,这是天理人情!
我把 “常礼举要”拿来略加增删,有十二部分:1. 居家 2. 在校 3. 处世 4. 聚餐 5. 出门 6. 访人 7. 会客 8. 旅行 9. 对众 10. 馈赠 11. 庆吊 12. 称呼。 我会在我的部落格上登出来,八月开始,每月一篇,到明年六月登完。我也会在课堂上讲解,但不会占用很多时间。希望同学们在日常生活中去实践,并写出自己的感想,让大家来讨论。
我觉得高班的同学还应该学“弟子规”。这本书是依据孔子的教诲而编成的生活规范。特别讲求家庭教育与生活教育,是启蒙养正的最佳读物。先由康熙年间秀才李毓秀所作,后由贾存仁修订改编。我想节选其中易懂,易行的部分来讲。为了让同学们理解,我会同时打出英文译文。我也会在部落格上登出来,供同学们参考。
“礼”只是“素质”教育的一部分。“素质”与“学历”有关,但不等于学历。如果我们去问一位大学生:假如你手里有一样非常好吃的东西,你现在拥有了它,你会怎么做?这位大学生毫不犹豫地说:吃了它,我会好好地享受它的美味。如果我们去问一位只有中学毕业的妈妈:假如你手里有一样非常好吃的东西,你现在拥有了它,你会怎么做?妈妈会毫不犹豫地说:给孩子吃。如果我们去问一位只有小学毕业的爸爸:假如你手里有一样非常好吃的东西,你现在拥有了它,你会怎么做?爸爸会毫不犹豫地说:给爸爸,妈妈吃。三人的学历不一样,答案也不一样。他们之间的区别是:只想到自己,还是同时也想到别人,而且想到更多的别人。可以这么说,素质好的人,总是把别人放在心里,想到自己比较少,想到别人比较多。
道理懂了,问题是怎么培养好素质呢?“三字经”的第一句就说:人之初,性本善。这里的“善”不是“善恶”的“善”,而是“纯洁天真”的意思,是“素质”的“素”的意思。小孩子的眼睛像两只摄像机,耳朵像两只话筒,一天不停地接受外界的讯号。可是,他的脑袋只能存储,还无法分辨什么是好讯号,什么是不好的讯号。因此,家庭教育的影响是十分重大的。所以,我们的祖先告诉我们:百善孝为先。“孝”的表现就是“想到别人”。然后是“悌”,也是“想到别人”。孩子从小就看到爸爸,妈妈时刻想到爷爷,奶奶,叔叔,姑姑,舅舅,阿姨,他就会效仿,学习,慢慢就养成习惯,什么事都会先想到别人,再想自己。他的素质就在孝悌,礼让,恭谦,友爱的家庭里形成了。反之,就会“苟不教,性乃迁”了。什么爸爸,妈妈,爷爷,奶奶,还有什么同学,朋友,我才不管呢,我自己最要紧。这样的人读到博士,素质还是差。他有很高深的知识,但只有很低的智慧。不过,这种案例很少,因为智慧低的人,往往知识也浅薄,就算读了博士,也做不了大事。不分美国,中国,全世界一样,“厚德”才能“载物”啊!
祖先留给我们很多知识和智慧,老师既要教知识,也要教智慧。同学们既要学知识,也要学智慧。这才是教育。看来清华的校训“厚德载物”不是光说给清华人听的。
